Marcella E. Mitchell, née Rooney, of Great Kills, Staten Island, passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 8, 1941, Marcella was the beloved wife of Deacon Richard Mitchell for 61 years.
Marcella was a devoted mother to her children Laura Mitchell and Denise Mazzella, and a cherished mother-in-law to Joseph Mazzella. She was preceded in death by her daughter Farrah. Marcella was a loving grandmother to Joseph Bonamo, Gina Bonamo, Rose Santangelo, Kate Bonamo, Sophia Bonamo, Christina Mazzella, Joseph Mazzella, and Theresa Mazzella.
In addition to her immediate family, Marcella is survived by her siblings James Rooney and Margaret Alwon. She was preceded in death by her brothers Thomas, Peter, and William Rooney, and her sister Maryann Rooney. Marcella was also predeceased by her parents Maryann and Peter Rooney and her brother Richard. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom she cherished dearly.
In 1969, Marcella, along with her husband and children, made Great Kills, Staten Island, their home. She was an active member of St. Clare Parish, where she dedicated herself to teaching CCD, serving on the school parent association, and acting as the Program Coordinator for Marriage Preparation. Marcella's passion for her faith was evident in her role in starting and implementing the RCIA program for adults and children preparing to join the Catholic faith.
While Marcella held various positions throughout her life, she treasured her roles as a mother, grandmother, and foster mother above all else. Her greatest joys were found in her family, her faith, and her Irish heritage.
Marcella had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling, frequenting Atlantic City, and spending quality time with her family and numerous friends.
A visitation for Marcella will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 and Friday, May 3, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Casey-McCallum Rice Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 12:00 PM at St. Clare's Church, New York, NY 10308, with a committal service following at Resurrection Cemetery, 361 Sharrott Ave, New York, NY 10309.
Marcella will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
