Joseph T. Hughes loving husband, father and grandfather, of Eltingville, Staten Island, NY peacefully passed into God’s arms on February 17, 2020 surrounded by the love of his family. Joe, beloved husband of Sandra Hughes, father to JoAnne Saffioti, Kathy Danielsen, Laurie Siriday and Michelle McCabe. Grandfather to Thomas, Tyler, and Nicholas Danielsen, Bianca and Gary Siriday, Edward, Joseph, and Patrick McCabe. Son in laws Tommy Saffioti, Tom Danielsen, Gary Siriday and Edward McCabe. Survived by his sister Dorothy Richards, numerous nieces and nephews, and his late sisters Maryanne Bartozak and Tracey Sasek.
Joe was born in Graniteville in 1935, where he grew up to later meet and marry his high school sweetheart, Sandra Servidio for 59 years. Joe was enlisted in the United States Army in 1958, upon his return the couple moved together to Mariners Harbor. In 1969, Joe and his wife Sandra settled in Eltingville where they raised their four daughters.
Joe’s work career first started with the NY Parks Department, later with NY Sanitation Department and lastly as a NY Housing Police Officer before he joined the New York Fire Department on October 2, 1962. He was assigned to Engine 15 in Manhattan and retired from Engine 166 in Staten Island in 1981. After retiring from FDNY, he worked at St. John University as a security guard.
Joe always enjoyed spending time with his family, taking trips down to the Jersey Shore and loved spending the day at the Monmouth Race Track. While growing up, Joe played football with his life long friends at the Granite A.C. Joe loved the time he spent with his grandchildren, especially cheering them on during sports and competitions.
Anyone who knew him, knew him for his sense of humor and quick wit. To know him was to know one of the kindest people that ever lived. Joe’s life will forever be honored and remembered by his family and friends.
