Mr. Zakrzewski was born September 6, 1949, in Staten Island, and grew up in New Brighton. John, an athlete, was a graduate of Curtis High School. After high school, he continued to play sports, coach, & umpire. He enjoyed being a member of the Crystal Forum Social Club too. He worked as a foreman for United States Gypsum Corporation, retiring after 35 years.
Funny, easy-going, kind, caring, honest, competent, athletic, hard-working, dedicated and empathetic are all words that described “Zack.” For these qualities, and many others, he was loved and will be remembered by those who knew him. For those that didn't know him, we're sorry you missed that opportunity - because he was truly one of a kind!
John enjoyed golfing, tailgating before football games, watching the Yankees, rooting for the Jets (as a season ticket holder), and going “down the shore” each summer. But mostly, “Zack” just loved spending time with friends & family, especially his grandsons. Of all the things he accomplished in life, he was most proud of his family – boasting about them whenever he saw the opportunity. The memories he made, with those he loved, will undoubtedly last them a lifetime.
He is survived by his wife of 43+ years, Peggy (Margaret Sullivan), his daughters Karen Zakrzewski (Charles W. Hofstetter) and Jill Zakrzewski, his two grandsons, Aiden and Charles, his sisters Carol (Torrone/Ferrer) and Maureen (Rohrig), and his nieces and nephew.
Friends & family will be received at Harmon Funeral Home on Friday, June 11th from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. A final celebration of “Zack’s” life will be held at Harmon Funeral Home on Saturday, June 12th at 10am.
