It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Benanti on September 29, 2024, at the age 65 years old. John was born on September 9, 1959 in Staten Island, N.Y., to the late Ben and Jean (Nee Termotto) Benanti.
John was a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School and then attended St. John’s University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He spent over 40 years working in city government.
John began his career working for the New York City Law Department. Soon after, he accepted a position with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Contracts, of which during that time, his work ethic led him to be hand-picked by City Hall to serve as the first Agency Chief Contracting Officer (ACCO) for the New York City Department for Aging. Under this assignment, John oversaw the registration of hundreds of Human Service Contracts. He immediately noticed a need for an automated system to track contracts. With a vision in mind, he facilitated the development of a system that simplified the process in having a timely registration for all contracts. His vision was successful so much so that John was once again selected by City Hall to implement the same process for the New York City Administration for Children’s Services. John’s leadership led to a promotion as Deputy Commissioner of Administration. Under his leadership, John successfully oversaw the renovation and completion of the Children Center, which is now used as a safe haven for children. John also oversaw the temporary conversion of the Family Center to assist families of 9/11 in locating their loved ones. John later moved onto his “dream job” by serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Support Services with the New York City Fire Department. He spent 13 years of his career managing supports for the department including the Fleet Services, Buildings, Technical Services, Support Services, and IT. John temporarily oversaw Human Resources in order to streamline a hiring process for the FDNY. On a personal level, John always took an interest in the success of others. Under his leadership and mentorship, many of the individuals who had the fortunate opportunity to work under John's direction also had successful careers. Another credit to this gifted man, John always took time to advise co-workers in decision making and many would stop by his office for advice.
John was an avid golfer and held a membership with Bella Vista Country Club. He enjoyed spending time with family at his summer home in Brigantine, N.J. In his spare time, John enjoyed reading, traveling, and watching sports.
He is survived by the love of his life, MaryAnn. He has four children Stephen Benanti, Lauren Caruso and her husband Michael, Kristen Gonzalez and her husband Andre, and Amanda Benanti along with three grandchildren Giuliana, Michael, and Bianca Caruso. He is also survived by his sisters, Anne Bozza, Cathy Papp and her husband Kal as well as nieces and nephews.
