Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, John moved to Staten Island, NY in 1989. He is predeceased by his parents, the Honorable A. Lawrence Acquavella, who proudly served as a civil judge in Brooklyn, NY, and Constance T. Acquavella, a beloved secretary at NY City Hall and the Brooklyn Democratic Party.
John is survived by his two daughters, Veronica (partner: Christopher Thompson of Bayonne, NJ); and Audra (husband: Richard Sprock) of Morristown, NJ; and his former wife Eileen Acquavella. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ryan and Madison Sprock of Morristown, NJ, his dear sister Lucille Lama,(Doylestown, PA), his nephew Alfred Lama (wife Terri and son Sean of Brooklyn, NY) and niece Elizabeth Myers (husband Robert and children Robert, Ruth, Hannah, Naomi and Nathaniel of Pennsylvania). John was also surrounded by many cousins and dear friends he loved and considered family, including the special community of friends near his chiropractic office in Bensonhurst (Brooklyn), his professional network of friends and doctors in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Staten Island.
A graduate of New York Chiropractic College, John served the community of Brooklyn and surrounding areas as a chiropractor, and treated patients from all parts of the globe. As a young adult, he proudly served in the U.S. Merchant Marines, and adored his time serving our country. He was also deeply proud of his Italian-American heritage, ties to the Italian community, and family legacy.
John’s true passion and calling in life was being a chiropractor. His healing hands helped countless lives. At his office, alongside his dedicated partner, Albina Masgudov, John did God’s work healing pain, correcting ailments, and changing the lives of his patients. Albina was like a sister to John in every respect, and they were a “dream team” for patients in their care. Even after retirement due to medical issues, John never stopped caring for the community he was a part of and maintained his ties to his lifelong friends.
John loved fishing, gardening, baseball and fiercely adored his Brooklyn Dodgers, and NY Mets. He filled with pure joy watching and following his grandson Ryan’s baseball career, and beamed with pride over Ryan’s hard work and dedication to the game. Clearly, John’s love for baseball lives on through Ryan, Madison and all of us.
The apple of John’s eye was Madison, his granddaughter. They had a beautiful bond, and he was so proud of Madison’s spirit, multiple talents, and giving heart. He couldn’t wait to share a laugh with her. He adored his honey bunny and loved watching her grow up into the loving young lady she is today.
John loved to laugh, had a great sense of humor, was kind, witty, and a fiercely loyal man who always put others before himself. His love of his friends, family and community is unmatched. John possessed a deep faith, which strengthened his resolve in dealing with many medical issues later in life. His love of the Lord carried him through dark days of pain and sickness. Despite his suffering, his concern for others and charitable acts continued through his life until the day he passed.
