James was born and raised in Rosebank, Staten Island, by his parents Rose Guercio and James Guastavino. His mother passed away when he was 10 years old, then he and his older brother Thomas (passed in February 2021) were raised by their father and three loving aunts, Josephine and Sarah Guercio and Frances Crivelli.
He attended New Dorp High School and led the Labetti Post American Legion football team to several undefeated seasons.
He graduated Wagner College with a degree in Mathematics, and later in life obtained an MBA in Financial Analytics from Hofstra University.
He worked on the first commercial computer UNIVAC 1. He spent most of his career at Doubleday publishing in Garden City. He also taught at Adelphi University and taught Computers at Saint Rita’s Elementary School for several years.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and an avid NY Giants and NY Yankees fan. He donated his time visiting the elderly and home-bound just talking, praying or reading to them.
He married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Margaret Vazzana on April 13,1952. Margaret passed away in May 1998.
Together they raised six children in a house full of faith and love.
He is survived by his six children: James (Kathy), Philip (Sharon), Joseph (Michelle), Peggy Apriceno (William), Mary Ellen Troiano (Frank), and Regina Rotondo (Christopher).
He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren: Philip Guastavino (Katie), Katie Williamson, James Guastavino (Monica), Christina Maida (Richard), Michael Williamson (Denise), Matthew Guastavino (Dely), Joseph Guastavino (Lauren), Meghan Carr (Tim), Lauren Guastavino, Mary Beth Doyle (Sean), Andrew Guastavino (Alex), Jennifer Kipp (Mike), John Robert Guastavino (Marian), Paul Guastavino (Meredith), Joseph Rotondo, Peter Rotondo, and Michael Rotondo, and 14 great-grandchildren.
A visitation for James will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Rita Church, 281 Bradley Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314. A committal service will occur Wednesday, November 15, 2023 from 11:15 AM to 11:30 AM at Moravian Cemetery, 2205 Richmond Road, Staten Island, NY 10306.
