Irene Mayo Zackaroff, 72, of West Brighton, Staten Island, N.Y., passed away at Addeo Hospice Residence on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Born in Tompkinsville, Staten Island, to Anna and James Mayo, she graduated from Curtis High School. She worked as a receptionist for the Visiting Nurse Association until she retired in 1991. She lived in Midland Beach, Staten Island, until Hurricane Sandy destroyed her home and she then relocated to West Brighton. She was compassionate to all animals but had a special place in her heart for stray cats and dogs, whom she fed and worked tirelessly to find homes for. She was an enthusiastic environmentalist who worked diligently to keep her community clean. Her family will always remember her for her quick wit and love of life. Her husband, George Zackaroff, passed away in 1990. She is survived by her son, Arne Jensen of Pretty Prairie, Kan; and her sisters, Dolores Johnson, Patricia Saliski, Sandra Caruso, and Karen McCabe. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marie Nouvertne and Lorraine Mayo Brennan. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Services are being handled by Casey Funeral Home. Friends may visit the funeral home on Sunday, June 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be on Monday at St. Teresa's Church at 10:45 a.m. Place of interment will be Ocean View Cemetery on Amboy Rd., Staten Island.
