Born Helen Diamantides in Cannonsburg, Pa., she was raised in Athens and Ikaria, Greece. She returned to the United States in 1947, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. She relocated to Dongan Hills in 1967.
Mrs. Denis worked for about 15 years in various cashier jobs including at Governors Island and downtown Manhattan near the Whitehall Ferry Terminal. She retired in the early 1980s.
She graduated from a high school in Greece.
Mrs. Denis was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Holy-Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Bulls Head.
She enjoyed visiting Atlantic City.
"She always gave a smile," said her son, Robert Denis.
Her husband of 30 years, Steve, died in 1984, and her grandson, George Siozos, died in 2007.
Along with her son, Robert, also surviving are a second son, Phillip; one daughter, Harriet Siozos; one sister, Kathryn Kotzalides; three grandchildren, and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Virginia Funeral Home, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Holy-Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
