Lifelong Staten Islander
Helen Demyan (nee Porus) passed away peacefully on Jan. 12, 2019, surrounded by her family. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday.
The wife of the late Jack Demyan and loving mother of the late Jackie Demyan Jr, Steven Demyan, Fran Demyan, Glenn Demyan, and daughter, Bonnie Backes (nee Demyan), she was the fond grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of five. She was also the dear sister of Marge Maier.
A lifelong Staten Islander, Helen was born and raised in New Brighton and went to St. Peter's High School. She lived in New Brighton and in the Silver Lake area all her life. Her late husband and the family owned and operated the popular restaurant, Demyan's Hofbrau, in Stapleton for many years.
Helen was a friendly, outgoing person, well-known throughout the community. A person with strong religious faith, she often visited the Alba House on Victory Blvd. in addition to attending Mass at her church.
She enjoyed bowling, music, fashions, reading, and studying psychology and spending time with her friends and family. She was a loving and dedicated mother always, and will be missed by all who knew her.
Viewing will be on Friday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Harmon Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Victory Blvd., Staten Island. Interment immediately following at St. Peter's Cemetery.
