Gloria Palmeri

Lifelong Staten lslander Gloria Palmeri, 82, a retired teacher and administrator with the city school system and a leader in her home community of Todt Hill, died on October 25, 2018 at home.

Born on Oct. 18, 1935 in the original Staten lsland Hospital on Castleton Avenue, the former Gloria Scarpelli grew up in Westerleigh and graduated from Curtis High school.

She earned a bachelor's degree in business education from Pace University and a master’s degree in teacher education from the former Richmond College.

Beginning in 1966, she was a business teacher for 26 years at Curtis High School, where she instructed students in word processing, business communications, personal management, stenography and typewriting.

She served in a variety of administrative roles at Curtis, including coordinator of mentoring programs between the school and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She was also a grade adviser and social director.

Prior to her career as an educator, Mrs. Palmeri held positions at several Manhattan firms. She was a stenographer for Dieges & Clust jewelers and a secretary for the Hunter Douglas Corporation, Long, Quinn & Boylan shipbrokers, and coopers & Lybrand certified public accountants.

She taught business education courses at Pace University and courses in stenography and typewriting at the former Richmond College. She was also an adult continuing education teacher of stenography and typewriting at Susan Wagner High School.

She met her husband, Angelo, during a ski trip in Vermont and they were married on Aug. 4, 1968 at Blessed Sacrament R'C. Church, West Brighton, with a reception in the former Riviera Chateau in Oakwood followed by a honeymoon to Hawaii.

The couple lived on Todt Hill since 1970.

A stylish woman with varied interests, Mrs. Palmeri enjoyed travel, architectural design, European and American history, reading and playing duplicate bridge.

She was a member of the Richmond County Country Club since 1978 and served as president of the Richmond County Bridge Club in 2006 and 2007.

She was also a member of the American Bridge Contract League and the Evergreen Garden Club and a volunteer at Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville.

Mrs. Palmeri served as president of the Todt Hill Civic Association from 2002 to 2009.

In addition to her devoted and much beloved husband, survivors include four loving brothers, Edward of Carlsbad, CA, Henry of Roseville, CA, Robert of Bullshead and Thomas of Bonita, CA as well as sister’s in law and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, Monday 10AM St. Ann’s Church, followed by an entombment in Moravian Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM.
