Gary A. Raqueno, beloved husband and father, passed away March 30 in Richmond University Medical Center after a seven-year battle with cancer. Throughout his illness, every challenge was faced courageously without a complaint nor thought of defeat.
Gary was born in Bremerhaven, Germany and came to live on Staten Island at the age of three, growing up in New Brighton. After leaving McKee High School, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy, following a long tradition of naval service in his family. While in the Navy, Gary served aboard the U.S.S. Seattle, part of a carrier group out of the Norfolk, Virginia Naval Base.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, Gary began work for Blackler Air Compressor, where he continued working for 37 years, until his recent retirement.
Gary was a devoted family man who took great pleasure and pride in supporting his children. He could be found sitting in the stands at every game, scrimmage, or tournament they participated in.
Gary is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Sause) and their children, Christopher and Steven. Gary is predeceased by his son, Patrick and his brother, Christopher Merillo.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
