He is survived by his wife of 68 years Betty Harty (nee Olson) as well as his children Melanie, Frank and Craig, in-laws Kathy Harty (nee Murphy) and Allan Falanga. Francis is also survived by seven grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle)Falanga, Alexander Falanga, Amanda (Desiree) Harty , Nicholas (Sarah) Falanga, Connor Harty, Patrick Harty and Liam Harty as well as three great grandchildren, Dylan, Aurelia and Gianna Falagna. In addition to the immediate family, he is also survived by his brother Bruce and many nieces and nephews.
As a teen he played baseball for Port Richmond High school. When severely injured during a game he received a hospital visit from the great Bobby Thompson and considered it to be one of the highlights of his life.
It was while in high school he met and married his lifetime love, Betty. They married on August 6th, 1955 and began a love story which would rival most fairy tails.
A true family man, he worked hard, doing round the clock shifts as the boiler house manager at the Port Ivory Proctor & Gamble factory to provide for his family. He retired at age 58 when the factory closed and often spoke about how he put the final locks on the factory gates.
Francis was a longtime pillar in the Staten Island community and could often be found at Pouch Camp working on and fixing just about anything. He became a Boy Scout at a young age and took the Scout motto of "be prepared" to heart. In his many years of Scouting service he was Scout Master of Troop 8 in Annadale for 26 years. Over the course of his years as Scout Master, over 100 young men obtained the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He was a masterful hiker with having completed multiple Philmont trips with the Scouts and has earned most of the highest awards that an adult Scouter can earn.
In his later years, he help found and volunteered on the board of Have a Heart Foundation of Staten Island running the golf outing, the annual 5K run/walk and breakfasts with Santa. Francis had a great love for golfing, volunteering in the community, and his family.
He was always there to offer a helping hand to anyone in need and was a true distinguished gentleman to say the least. He will be deeply missed by many but most of all, by his family.
Services will be held at Casey Funeral Home on Slosson Ave on Sunday November 5th from 2-4 and 7-9 and with a private service on Monday, November 6th.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to Have a Heart Foundation of Staten Island.
