He was born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and was a graduate of St. Augustine High School in his native borough. He moved to Westerleigh in 1981.
Mr. Evanac was employed as a heavy-equipment operator for the city Sanitation Department. After retiring from the agency in the early 1990s, he continued working in the field.
"He was magnetic, could light up a room, and had a heart bigger than he was, with room for everybody that he knew," said his wife, the former Kathleen McCarthy. "He was loved by all."
Mr. Evanac enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, his own machines, and blues, country, and old rock and roll music.
He loved his children dearly, and cherished his eight nieces and nephews as if they were his own.
Surviving, along with Kathleen, his wife of 32 years, are his sons, Frank and Matt.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Casey Funeral Home, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's R.C. Church, both in Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
