She was born on Staten Island, NY to Alice (nee Zari) and Joseph Anselmi on May 3 rd, 1928. She had two sisters, Dolores Smith and Giovanna Narni (deceased). She was educated at Notre Dame College where she received a BS in Chemistry and awarded Summa Cum Laude. After graduation, she married Matthew Barbera (deceased), a Doctoral Candidate in medicine. To further the education and career of her husband, they moved to Rome, Italy in 1950 where Mathew studied at the prestigious School of Medicine —University of Bologna. The ocean voyage proved to be treacherous as the ship (USS Excalibur) sank in the New York Channel upon sailing. Evelyn shared these memories in a televised interview. Successfully arriving in Rome and getting on with life, she became the mother to three children, Beatrice, Alex (deceased) and Stefano (deceased).
She returned to Staten Island after Matthew received his medical degree. While Matthew started his practice, Evelyn worked as an office manager for the private dental practice of Lavori, Puglisi, Abbadessa and Griswold. She lived in her home on Nixon Avenue for over 50 years where her father had developed a family compound. Matthew passed away in 1972. Evelyn remarried Robert L Gans of Staten Island in 1974. She became stepmother to Bob's children: Robert Jr, Carolyn, Karl (deceased) and Elisabeth. She actively participated in the Ward-Nixon Association. Evelyn volunteered at St. Vincent's Hospital.
She and her husband Bob were cherished and well respected in their community. They were both devout Catholics. They travelled extensively with Capri being their favorite destination.
Evelyn was a vibrant, effervescent, confident, family oriented, elegant, articulate and lovely woman who shared her culinary skills and warm sense of humor in entertaining friends and family; and loved playing tennis, pool and card games. She was gregarious and very loving.
