Charles “Charlie” Mazzone passed away peacefully on June 13, 2024, at Staten Island University Hospital, with his niece Stella by his side.
Born in Thompkinsville on May 22, 1936, to Marie Adinolfi and Biagio Mazzone in Staten Island, NY, Charlie led a life full of service, love, and dedication. At a young age, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving his country overseas. During his service in Germany, he met and fell in love with his wife, Margit, marrying her when he was just 21 years old.
After leaving the military, Charlie transitioned to a career in finance, where he made significant contributions to several hospitals, including Saint Vincent’s, Lenox Hill, and NYU. He ultimately retired as the Vice President of Finance, a role he took immense pride in.
Charlie was a man of many talents and hobbies. He found joy in creating intricate wood carvings, nurturing his plants, and staying informed by watching the Fox News Business channel. He was also very proud of his Hummel figurine and plate collection. In his younger years, he was passionate about gardening and loved taking long walks.
Animals held a special place in Charlie’s heart. He was never without his loyal dog, fondly named Schnapsie. In the later years of his life, he adopted a senior cat from the SPCA named Shadow, whom he adored and was “tickled pink” over.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Margit, his son Christopher, and his sisters Mildred “Millie” Nitto and Anna Masiello. He is survived by his sons Steven (Carolyn) Lassell and Michael (Audrey) Lassell, his daughter-in-law Lydia Mazzone, his dedicated niece Stella Aliotta who cared for him, his nephew John (Louise) Nitto, and numerous grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great-nephew.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Charlie’s memory to one of the organizations close to his heart: The ASPCA, Staten Island University Hospital, and the New York Public Library.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY. Viewing will be held on Sunday, June 23rd from 12pm-4pm. Family and friends are welcome to attend and share memories and celebrate his life. Lunch will be served. Funeral and burial service will be held on Monday, June 24th at 10am.
