She was born in Mariners Harbor on Dec. 16, 1922, the daughter of the late Diego and Elena Grassia. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Carmine J. Vorrasi, in 2013.
Catherine is survived by her loving children, Ellen M. Spisto (Michael R.), Cathy J. Lauria (Richard), and Thomas J. Vorrasi (Linda Ferrino). She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren, Michael C. Spisto (Katie Lynn), Lauren C. Trakhtenberg (Michael), Rachel C. Lauria and Eric Vorrasi (Amy) and great- grandchildren, Michael, Christopher and Alyssa Spisto; James and Gabriella Trakhtenberg, and Ilaria Vorrasi.
Catherine was a lifelong Staten Islander who graduated from P.S. 44 and Port Richmond High School. After raising her adoring family, she joined the workforce as an office manager for Dr. Conrad Schroder. She worked for him for over 20 years until her retirement in 1989. Catherine was a Girl Scout Leader for a Blessed Sacrament troop from 1961 to 67. She was also a member of the Harbor Lights, a group of life long neighborhood friends who met regularly to share memories. She was proud of her Italian heritage, as well as being a native Staten Islander growing up in Mariners Harbor.
Catherine was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She never missed a sporting event, dance recital, or school play. Some of her many hobbies included sewing, knitting, and crocheting. One of her biggest enjoyments was baking/cooking for her family, only sharing her "secret" recipes with family. She was truly the matriarch of the family and did everything for them. Her family was her life and she meant everything to them.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church on Thursday at 10 a.m., with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
