Catherine P Hughes Mother of 10 and Grandmother of 19
On Wednesday, July 28 Catherine “Pat” Hughes (nee Huber) died at home surrounded by her loving family at the age of 89. She was born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1932 at her home in Redhook, Brooklyn giving reason to her nickname “Pat”. She was the mother of 10 and grandmother of 19. Her family was her pride and joy.
In 1955 she married the brother of her best friend Peggy, Jim. She often spoke of how she “fell for him” after he caught her as she fell down the stairs in the home of her future husband. After a few years of residing in Sunset Park, Brooklyn she and her husband moved the family to Great Kills in 1965. She remained in the same house for 56 years and considered her neighbors as part of the family. Catherine had a love of music, having a song in her heart and on her lips with her beautiful voice. After enjoying raising her family for 30 years she added to her schedule and returned to being a secretary at U.S.A.I.G.
She was an active member of the Parish of St. Clare, including being an assistant teacher in the parish preschool.
Catherine was predeceased by her husband James G, her parents; Richard and Mary Huber, her sister Mary McGuinness and Catherine’s daughter Catherine McEnearney (Steven).
She is survived by her sister Irene Romano and children; James J, John (Christine), Richard (Eileen), Edward (Lynn), Peter (Tinamarie), Barbara Hurley (James), Patricia Grasso (Patrick), Mary, and Joseph (Rachael). She cherished her 19 grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
She will be reposed at Casey McCallum Rice Funeral Home at 30 Nelson Avenue on Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 9:45 am at St. Clare Church. The burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the American Cancer Society are encouraged.
