Carmel Vitale (nee DiMaggio), 92, of Dongan Hills, Staten Island, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 2, 2016.
She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph A.; beloved mother of Nicholas (Lisa) and Patricia Clinton (Edward); loving sister of Louise Ruggiero; the cherished grandmother of Joanne Rivera (Fernando Reinoso), Maureen Saldiver (Amado, Nicole Vitale and Cara Vitale; the cherished great-grandmother of Christopher, Alexander and Nicolas and the loving aunt and great- aunt of several.
Born in Brooklyn in 1924, Carmel was brought to S.I. when she was three years old. She graduated from New Dorp High School in 1941 and attended Staten Island Community College.
She taught kindergarten in St. Ann's School from 1962 to 1964 and in St Joseph's School, Rosebank, from 1964 to 1986. She retired in 1986.
She was a parishioner of St. Ann's Church for over 80 years. She belonged to the St. Ann's Golden Age Club and the AARP Mid Island Group.
She loved playing the piano, sewing, crocheting, playing bingo at the Golden Age Club, trips to Atlantic City and spending time with her family on the beach in Wildwood, N.J., every summer. She loved teaching kindergarten and called her students her babies.
Funeral is on Monday from Virginia Funeral Chapel, 1707 Hylan Boulevard, Dongan Hills. Funeral Mass is on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann RC Church. Interment will be in Moravian Cemetery. Visiting is on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
