Retired Sergeant, Devout Catholic. Barbara Ann Geraghty of Grant City died on February 5, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Her family moved to Staten Island in the early 50's settling in Dongan Hills. She attended St. Ann's school, and then on to St. Joseph Hill Academy.
She entered the NY City Police Academy in 1973 and upon graduation was assigned to the 5th precinct in Chinatown, being among the first groups of women on patrol. She spent 21 years in the department. She worked in private security after the police department and completely retired in 2005. She volunteered briefly for Meals on Wheels until her back pain forced her to stop.
She was a devout Catholic and faithful parishioner of St. Christopher's Church where she became a member of the St. Christopher Socialites. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was an active member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, St. Brigid Div. 4. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Staten Island Lodge 120, VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 9587 and a Lifetime member of the Sergeant's Benevolent Association of the NYPD.
In her spare time she enjoyed reading and occasional trips to Atlantic City, and the Fenwick Island, Delaware/Ocean City, Maryland area where she had many relatives and owned property. She was one of the biggest animal lovers in the world. There wasn't a time in her life when she didn't own a cat or two and sometimes even a dog, but according to her son Daniel, she was a cat aficionado at heart.
In addition to her son Daniel, she is survived by her brother Edmund, granddaughter Ruthie and great granddaughters Mikayla and Victoria Lee. She was predeceased by her first grandchild, Debra Lee.
