Ann Elizabeth Bennett, an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker, multimedia producer, and devoted community advocate, passed away on November 15, 2024, at the age of 61 in New York City. Born in Baltimore, MD, Ann spent her formative years in Cambridge, MA, where her passion for storytelling and the arts first took root. She was a proud alumna of Harvard/Radcliffe College and earned a Master of Arts in Arts & Culture from the Columbia School of Journalism.
Ann's distinguished career in film and media was marked by her deep commitment to exploring the intersections of history, culture, disability, and technology within diverse communities. As a producer, she made significant contributions to projects such as the NAACP Image Award-winning PBS feature documentary, Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People, and the innovative multi-platform initiative Digital Diaspora Family Reunion (DDFR). Her film credits include impactful works like Citizen King and Fisk Jubilee Singers for the PBS series "American Experience," Hymn for Alvin Ailey for "Dance in America," the award-winning PBS mini-series Africans in America and America’s War on Poverty, and the recently released Razing Liberty Square.
Beyond her groundbreaking media work, Ann was a dedicated and active member of her community. She found great joy in her involvement with the Episcopal Church, where she contributed her time and energy to various initiatives. Ann was also a passionate advocate for young women in technology, volunteering with Girls Who Code to mentor and inspire the next generation of female leaders in the tech industry.
Her life was defined not only by her professional achievements but also by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to social justice. Ann traveled extensively, using her platform to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities and foster a deeper understanding of cultural history. It was also important for her to have as much quality time as she could with her brother and sister-in-law, father and step-mother, and extended family.
Ann leaves behind a legacy of impactful storytelling, community service, and a profound influence on the worlds of documentary filmmaking and social advocacy.
