Shirley Reed, 91, of Stanley, passed away peacefully in her home on February 11th. She was born in Charlotte, NC, on August 25th, 1932. Shirley retired from Mercy Hospital OR working as a secretary. She was not only dedicated to her work but also cherished her roles as a loving wife, devoted mother, adored Maw Maw, caring aunt, and loyal friend. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren, whose presence brought her immeasurable happiness and fulfillment. Shirley had a passion for brightening others' days, whether through thoughtful gestures like sending cards or her involvement in charitable endeavors. She never turned a blind eye to someone or something in need. Renowned as a wonderful cook, Shirley's potato soup and Sunday roasts were beloved by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Her fondness for the beach brought countless cherished memories shared with loved ones by the shore. Shirley leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and love that will forever be treasured by those fortunate enough to have known her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Moore; her mother, Leoma Crawford; and her brother, Fredrick Moore. Her beloved pets, Sarge and Dotti, have also gone on before her.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Leo F. Reed. Her children are left to cherish their memories and to carry on her legacy: Virginia Slaughter, Linda Riddle, Elizabeth Slaughter, Laura Shive and husband Nelson, Cara Oglesby and husband Randy, Leo Reed Jr. and Rebecca, and Deirdra Phillips and husband Vance. Missing their grandmother are her grandchildren: Russel Cloninger, Philip Shive, Amanda Shive, Jessica Wilkerson, Jacob Shive, John Shive and wife Cassidy, Marianne Fowler and husband Mark, Elizabeth Vaughn and husband Jimmie, Carrie Shive, Joshua Phillips, Brittany Pedroza and husband Emil, Cale Phillips, Ashley Eckley and husband Chris, Luke Reed, Ashley Miller and husband Justin, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A service remembering Shirley’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday February 18, 2024 at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley. The address is 412 South Main Street, Stanley, NC. The family will receive friends before the service, at the funeral home, beginning at 1:00 pm. The officiant is Deacon Chip Wilson from Queen of The Apostles Roman Catholic Church in Belmont. Reverend Billy Chapman of The Rock Church, in Bessemer City, will assist. Shirley will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, in Mount Holly, immediately following the funeral service.
