A native of Washington County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late King David Hawthorne Sr. and Malta Denny Hawthorne.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of Westview Presbyterian Church in Mount Holly.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mabel was a lovely person that everyone loved. She was never a mother-in-law to Linda, Sally “Karo”, Rodney and Marvin; she was a best friend and another mother. People could not tell which ones were her children and which ones were her in-laws. Mabel always had time for everyone.
She is survived by her children, John D. Thomas and wife, Sally “Karo” of Stanley, Gary L. Thomas and wife, Linda of Stanley, Janet T. Bentley and husband, Rodney of Mount Holly, Sharon T. Johnson and husband, Marvin of the home; brothers, Graham “Pete” Hawthorne and wife, Alberta of Marion, Virginia; sister-in-law, Jessie Warren of Glade Spring, Virginia; grandchildren, James Patrick Bentley, Myron Clay Bentley and wife, Yessenia, Johnida Thomas, Michelle Johanson, Marsha Tarte and husband, Mike, Melissa Faile and husband, Glenn, Jason Johnson, Kevin Johnson and wife, Lesley; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Harold Thomas; sisters, Nell Jaskowski, Carrie Zavotsky; brothers, Walter Hawthorne, King David Hawthorne Jr.; and great grandson, Brayden Cade Faile.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Westview Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jeff Bost officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley.
