Dallas, NORTH CAROLINA--John Yates Maxwell, 71, went to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ on September 14, 2018. He was born in Gastonia, NC on October 22, 1946 to the late Ladd and Grace Garrison Maxwell.
Yates was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the love of my life, my friend, and soulmate, sharing every moment together. He was full of energy, always finding things to do and see. He said, “Home is where you go when there is nothing else to do.” He will be greatly missed by his wife and all of his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Sarah Carlisle Maxwell of Dallas; son, Myron Maxwell of Alexis, daughter, Krista Maxwell Smith (Steven) of Dallas, step-children Tammy Chastain of Mt. Holly, Roxanne Chastain Stadler (Chris) of Gastonia, and Barry Chastain of Belmont. Grandchildren: Taylor and Hannah Smith, Landon and Madison Maxwell, Jordan Black, Rachel Cooper, Cody and Audrey Stadler, Shelby and Beverly Chastain, and Emily Chastain Bryson (Kyle). Great grandchildren: Lilly Grace Stadler, Jacob and Olivia Bryson.
Yates, a 1968 graduate of Appalachian State University finishing with a 6-year degree in education. He has worked for the Gaston County Sheriff’s Department for the past 18 years. Yates retired from Gaston County Schools with 33 years of service as a teacher, coach and principal. He also served 42 years as a Minister of Music for various churches within Gaston County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his newborn daughter. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church, 409 Old Mt. Holly Road, in Stanley on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. The celebration of life will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Alexis Baptist Church Cemetery.
A special thanks is given to the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Cancer Center and Dr. Bhave and her team of oncologists for all the love and care that has been given to my loving husband and friend during his illness.
