George Wallace Hughes, III, age 63, of Stanley, NC, passed away after a long illness on Friday, December 3, 2021 at his home. Mr. Hughes was born in Hartselle, Alabama on September 9, 1958 to the late George Wallace Hughes and Ada Brisson Hughes.
He retired from Lincoln County in 2019 after 30 plus years in Water and Waste Water Treatment. Mr. Hughes enjoyed socializing with family and friends. He often talked about politics and religion. George loved listening to music, the outdoors and working around the house. He always had a warm welcoming smile and a zest for life. George is a beautiful soul and will truly be missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his brothers, Joseph Hughes and Garrett Hughes.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 21 years, Zonina Roark Hughes of the home; daughters, Stephenie Hughes and Rebecca Hughes both of Fayetteville; stepsons, Chaz Roark of Iron Station and Steven Roark of Greensboro; grandchildren, Leeland Petty and Hannah Hancock both of Fayetteville; sister, Betha Williamson of Delaware; sister-in-law, Sherry Hughes of Georgetown; mother-in-law, D.J. Roark of Iron Station; special friend, Scott Sanders and his beloved K-9 companion, Levi.
Mr. Hughes requested to not have a public service. His family will have a private service at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff of Gaston Hospice for the loving care they showed George and his family.
