age 67, a long time Stamford resident passed away on Tuesday June 28th after a brief illness.
Walter was born in Long Island City, New York on February 21, 1944. He was the son of the late Walter V. and Lillian V. Smith. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Judith; his beloved children Jessica Smith, Stephanie Smith Geier and her husband Alex, Jason Smith and his wife Lyn, and Colleen Smith. He also leaves behind four adored grandchildren; Eleanor, Margaret, Colin and Keira. He is also survived by his sister; Judith Brennan her husband Sean and his loving uncle and aunt Jack and Kathleen Geiger as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Jonathan W. Smith.
Walter was a tax attorney who had a long and distinguished career with Altria Corporation where he was the Vice President of Corporate Taxes. He was a member of St. Leo’s Parish and was an active volunteer in the community. Upon retirement, Walter explored his sense of adventure through travelling, becoming a licensed pilot and also joining the United States Auxiliary Coast Guard where he achieved the status of Flotilla Staff Officer and Vessel Examiner.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 1, 2011 at St. Leo Parish, 24 Roxbury Road in Stamford at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Stamford. Relatives and friends may call at Leo P. Gallagher & Sons Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford on Thursday, June 30,, 2011 from 4 to 8pm.
