With great sorrow we announce the passing of our mother, Rebecca (Becky) Israel Mark, beloved wife of the late Julian S. Mark, DDS in Stamford, who died in 2010. Becky was a beautiful, energetic and passionate woman who loved to cook, design, read, knit and encourage all who came her way to seek out ways to improve themselves. She was a broad thinker of ideas and an incessant problem solver which lead her to develop her skills as a keen business woman at a time—in the 70s-- when women in business were few and far between. She created a company, Cosmepak, named after the product of the same name, which was eventually sold to a large manufacturing company. The product is available to this day. It was her innovative ideas of product design and her incredibly hard work that lead to her success.
Becky was the eldest of 4 daughters of immigrant parents, from Turkey and Greece. She is survived by her 5 children; Susan Mark Hamlin (Chris), Stephanie Mark, Andrew Mark (Marina), Jane Mark Moritz (Josh) and Joshua Mark (Beth) as well as 12 grandchildren; Rachel Mark (Tomas), David Mark, Amanda Brady, Sam Moritz, Harry Moritz, Mike Moritz, Orly Mark Metzger (Moishe), Talia Mark, Aharon Mark (Gavriella), Aliza Mark and step grandchildren Nat Hamlin and Kathy Hamlin (Jeff). She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren; Jules, Celia, Anouk, and Yoel Baruch. Becky's family and friends live in far away places such as Israel, France, Kenya, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida and New York. She spent many hours on the phone and email keeping in touch, enjoying photos and music. Both she and Julian were longtime subscribers to New York Philharmonic, a tradition she continued to enjoy until recently.
Throughout her life, the kitchen remained her favorite place. It was where all gathered for her outstanding cooking including her many Sephardic specialties learned from her parents. To her, the kitchen was the most important gathering place. Cooking, eating well and having friends and family over to share a great meal and conversation, followed by a game of Scrabble or poker, was the height of pleasure. Becky was an avid follower of the latest cookbooks, cooking shows, restaurants and markets. Even in the last days in the hospital, Becky wanted the latest restaurant reviews read to her just so she'd know. Becky would have been 90 on April 20, 2018.
Funeral will take place on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11 a.m., Congregation Agudath Shalom, 301 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford, 06906, followed by interment at Agudath Shalom Cemetary, West Hill Road, Stamford, CT 06902. Shiva will be held at the family home. Details available through the synagogue.
