Philip Horowitz, 91, of Delray Beach, FL. and Stamford, CT., the former owner of Karp's Golden Glo Bakery, passed away on December 3 in Florida. Phil was born in Mugaluv Russia to Julius and Sarah Horowitz. At the age of 5 he his parents and his younger brother, Izzy, escaped Russia and fled across Europe eventually arriving in Holland where his youngest brother, Joseph, was born. In 1928 they arrived in New York City coming in through Ellis Island. Once there the five of them moved in with his aunt, uncle and two cousins in. They all lived in a cramped two bedroom apartment in the Bronx. He went to school not knowing how to speak one word of English he could speak Russian, Yiddish, and Dutch but had to learn English as quickly in order to survive. He did survive and he did graduate from James Monroe High School.
He was drafted and served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific theater attaining the rank of Sergeant. It was there that he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. After the war he met Martha Licht. And in 1948 on March 6th he and Martha were married. Over the course of their marriage they had four children Richard, Alan, David and Edward. They were married for fifty two years.
Through his marriage he became, through his father in-law Solomon Licht, the owner of the Tuxedo Bakery in the Bronx. In 1950 the family moved to Stamford, CT. buying Karp's Brothers Bakery on Pacific St. eventually moving to Washington Blvd. renaming the bakery Karp's Golden Glo Bakery.
While in Stamford he became an integral and active member of the community. The family belonged to the Jewish Community Center and Augudath Sholom Synagogue. He was a member of both the Knights Of Pythias and the Jewish War Veterans serving as commander of both organizations. He also served for many years on the committee that picked the Jewish War Veteran's Citizen of the Year.
In 1980 he closed the bakery. He then went on to work for Grade A Market on Shippan Ave, opening their first in store bakery. He finally retired full time and he and Martha became snowbirds living in both Stamford and Delray Beach, Florida.
After the passing of his wife Martha, Phil eventually became a full time resident of Delray Beach. He became an active member of the Delray Beach community, where he met his friend and companion Rosalyn Cohen.
Philip was predeceased by his wife Martha and infant son Edward. He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Richard and Teri of San Diego, CA., Alan and Maria of Sherman, CT and David and Yvonne of Stamford. He is also survived 14 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, his two brothers and their wives, and his loving companion Rosalyn Cohen of Delray Beach, FL. He is also survived my many nieces, nephews, cousins and loyal friends.
The family wishes to extend a special heartfelt thanks to our fathers two dedicated caregivers in Florida, Michael Shelton and Tracy Noble. They were our eyes and ears making sure our father received the best of care while we were miles away. They assured him both dignity and comfort in his final days. We and our father have grown to love them and feel that they have become members of our family.
His funeral will take place on Thursday December 6, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at Augudath Sholom Synagogue 301 Strawberry Hill Ave. Stamford, CT. Burial will follow at Augudath Sholom Cemetery on Westhill Rd. Stamford, Ct.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes that donation be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, or a charity of ones choice.
