Leonard was born on March 5, 1947, in Flushing and moved to Rego Park, Queens when he was 9. After Len graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1964, he went on to study psychology at Pace University.
After working as a math teacher, then in advertising for several years, Len took computer classes which kickstarted his career in computer programming. He worked as a software developer for over 30 years.
Len and JoAnn have known each other since they were teenagers and married in 1968. They have one son, Michael. They had a long and very happy marriage. They lived in Florida briefly before returning to Queens where they lived until 2001 when they moved to Stamford, CT. He had a long list of friends, many of which for more than half a century he maintained a strong relationship.
Leonard was an incredibly active person with many hobbies and interests. He spent his winters skiing in Vermont and he had traveled to most western US ski resorts over the past 25 years. He was also an avid tennis player when he was younger and continued to play with different groups of friends and took lessons into his 70’s. He enjoyed reading, computer programming, playing pool, discussing politics, astronomy, watching the Yankees to name a few interests. He and JoAnn were avid travelers. Leonard’s love for nature and specifically for National Parks was noteworthy. He made it to all 63 national parks in his lifetime, some of them more than once. One of his favorite hikes was the “wave” in Utah and can be seen on his website nationalparkszone.com which he started to share information about the national park system. Leonard was a devoted father and grandfather. Leonard and Michael spent an enormous amount of time together playing tennis, skiing. Leonard loved spending time with his grandchildren, Emma and Ben, whether it was on the slopes at Killington, ice skating or just playing “doctor”. Leonard had a great sense of humor and always had a story to tell anyone that would listen. He will be sorely missed and forever remembered.
Leonard is survived by his wife, JoAnn; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Lisa; and grandchildren, Emma and Benjamin.
