Justin Wroe Nixon, a long-time resident of Greenwich, economist and part time professor died peacefully on December 26, in hospice care in Stamford Hospital. Known as “Bill” to his friends Mr., Nixon was a humble man who perused a passion for economics and thinking about big ideas that shape the world. In later years, he developed a deep interest in Shakespeare, live theater, books and a longtime lover of classical music. For 25 years he was active in his faith community, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Stamford, serving as vice president and running annual pledge drives.
Mr. Nixon died from to complications from cancer and kidney problems. At aged 88, he enjoyed his last Christmas with his two adult children William H. Nixon of Kingston, NY and Robert E. Nixon of Old Greenwich, CT. He was preceded by his wife Anne Fletcher Nixon, who died in 1999. Mr. Nixon was born in in Rochester NY, the son of a prominent minister Rev. Justin Nixon Sr. and Ida Wickenden. His father was a preacher of the social gospel and fairness for the downtrodden. After serving in the Korean War, Mr. Nixon earned degrees at the University of Wyoming and McGill University. For 25 years, Mr. Nixon worked in the economics department of Citibank focusing on public sector economics. Mr. Nixon then taught entry level economics at local universities such as Fairfield University and Pace University.
Mr. Nixon was a fair man who listened to many opinions and deliberated long about many debates on the issues of his times. He was often moderate in his politics and economic views but also wanted to get to the essence of public issues. In his later years, he was active in the Foreign Policy book club at the Greenwich Library and went to many classical music concerts.
A private burial ceremony for Justin Nixon will be held at Putnam Cemetery on January 5, at 1 pm.
A public memorial service and celebration will be held in the spring at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
