John J. Hogan

John J. Hogan, a lifelong resident of Stamford, passed away on Friday September 7, 2012 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He was born on March 27, 1931 in Stamford, CT to the late Patrick J. and Margaret O’Brien Hogan. John attended Rogers Elementary School and was a proud member of the Stamford High School Class of 1949. He received a BA degree in Education from New Haven State Teacher’s College in 1954, a Master’s degree from Fairfield University in 1960 and a 6th Year advanced certificate from Fairfield University in 1964. He began his teaching career at Newfield School and also taught at Stark, Rogers and Franklin schools in Stamford and Royle School in Darien. John taught English as a Second Language in the Adult Education Program in Stamford for 22 years. He was a loyal and devoted member for over 60 years of the General Philip Sheridan Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as an officer and a tireless worker in promoting Irish causes. He also served on the Patriotic and Special Events Commission in Stamford. John served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 and was a member of the 49th Viking Division. John was a lifelong baseball fan. He enjoyed a great catch, a well- pitched game and a timely hit more than rooting for a specific team. John is survived by his wife of 52 years , Marjorie Serafin Hogan, and 3 daughters, Janet Hogan McMullen (J.R.) of Stamford, Paula Hogan of Knoxville, TN and Carolyn Hogan Leary (Jim) of Worcester, MA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: John, Timothy, Mary, Eileen and Caroline McMullen and Aidan, Seamus and Finian Leary. In addition, he survived by two sisters, Margaret Hogan Ryan of Stamford, CT and Irene Hogan DeCamp (Ron) of Brewster,MA: one brother, Frank Hogan (Marge) of Cincinnati, OH and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. A wake will be held on Monday, September 10, from 4-8 pm at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday September 11 at 11 am at St. Maurice Roman Catholic Church, 358 Glenbrook Rd, Stamford, CT. Interment will follow the Mass at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien, CT.
