Born February 25, 1921 in Saltcoats, Scotland, he was the son of Elizabeth Erskine Allison and William L. Allison. A graduate of Stamford High School, he attended Columbia University and the New York Tax Institute. Mr. Allison was employed by Conde Nast Publications and worked in their Financial Division for almost 55 years. He was appointed Corporate Controller in 1969 and Executive Director of Corporate Resources in 1989.
John was active in Community affairs in the 1950’s and the 1960’s, receiving the Junior Chamber’s “Outstanding Young Man of the Year” award in 1956. He was chairman of the Urban Renewal Commission, during their first project in the East Meadow St. area, and was Chairman of the United Fund Budget Committee. Some of his other activities included Chairman of Catholic Charities and Chairman of the Girl Scout Camp Francis Committee. He was a founding member and a Trustee of St. Leo Catholic Church. He also assisted St. Mary’s and Holy Spirit Church with their financial affairs. He was a member of the Senior Men’s Association of Stamford and the Civil War Round Table.
John was also active in the financial field as President of the Fairfield area of the Financial Executives Institute. He was eventually appointed Vice President of the Eastern area, which at that time included Chapters in Canada. John was awarded a life time membership for his work in the organization.
Mr. Allison served with the Air Force, during WWII, first as a weather forecaster, and then in the Inspector General’s section of the A.F. While serving overseas in the 14th A.F., he was one of a select few appointed by the Pentagon. He was awarded Legion of Merit for his service in China. After 4 ½ years of regular service, he spent 16 years in the reserve, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. He was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.
Mr Allison is survived by three children-Bonnie Allison Mehok ( married to Don Mehok), Richard Allison, and John Allison Jr.( married to Judith Kennedy); six grandchildren, Stacy, Elizabeth(Hough), David(married to Kristen Sunday), Gregory(married to Jennifer Perlson) , Peter and Michael Mehok ;seven great grandchildren, Lauren and Hunter Hough, Kaeley, Avery , Ashlyn and Emery Mehok(David’s children)and Isabelle Mehok(Gregory’s child). John was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret Perry.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 pm on August 4th at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St. a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Leo Church on Monday, August 5th, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford, CT.
