Janet Marion Weiss, 95, died peacefully on October 4, 2013 at Stamford Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born July 3, 1918 in Providence, RI to Fannie Goldman Mitchnick and Meyer Mitchnick, Janet grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, and lived in Stamford since 1954. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Weiss, to whom she was married for 40 years, and her second husband, Lenny Levine, her high school sweetheart, who died in 2004. Survivors include her sons, Jeff (Mary Jo), Alan (Susan), and Mitch (Martha); grandchildren, Greg (Shari), Randy (Kate), Kate (Eric), and Tim; and great grandchildren, Brian, Matthew, Britney, Christian, and Bailey.
After raising three sons, she began her career at Jacobi Hospital as a psychiatric social worker and later had a practice as a sex therapist. At seventy, she obtained her masters from Goddard College. She was a lifelong Democrat who was passionate about many causes. A peace activist, she marched against the Vietnam War and in support of civil rights. Janet cared deeply about education and, in the late 50s, helped found a tutoring program at Southfield Village.
Janet charmed everyone she met with her sense of humor, including complete strangers on line at the supermarket. Her sharp wit was fully intact right to the end. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, and bridge player. She grew up near the water and never lost her love of it. A wonderful storyteller, Janet was never happier than when she was surrounded by family and friends of all ages, telling one of her funny anecdotes. Her proudest accomplishment by far was her three sons; she never wavered in her love and support for them through their many phases.
She was always on the go and participated in many activities: tennis, golf, swimming, and her favorite, exercise class. In her later years, you could always find her on Tuesday evenings at Jeff & Mary Jo’s enjoying her great grandchildren.
Her family wishes to thank all of her wonderful caregivers, the staff at Stamford Hospital, and Masonicare hospice. A service in celebration of Janet’s life will be held on Monday, October 7th at 2 P.M. at Leo P Gallagher and Son Funeral Home 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or Americares.
