Jane Spencer Herrmann, 94, of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 18, surrounded by her family and dear friend and caregiver, Stephanie Lawrence. Born in Queens, NY, to the late Arthur J. and Mildred M. Spencer, she graduated from Adelphi University with a BS in Nursing and from Fairfield University with a MA in Education. She was employed by Stamford Hospital for 35 years and touched many lives with her skilled, compassionate care as a nurse, educator, and administrator. She was a devoted member of Trinity Emmanuel/Christ the Healer Episcopal Church and later St. Francis Episcopal Church in Stamford. She served on the vestry, as a Sunday School teacher, and in the Pacific House Men’s Shelter by preparing and serving food.
Jane will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her generous spirit of acceptance toward others, her wry sense of humor, and her kindness. As the mother of four, called on to arbitrate many sibling disputes, one of her frequent sayings was, “When you weigh and measure, you always come up short.” She took her own advice: even with the struggles of advanced age, her own life was a model of gratitude for each day’s blessings. Chief among those blessings was her family. Jane loved nothing more than to gather her children and grandchildren at her home on Narragansett Bay in Jamestown, RI, recreating the seaside pleasures of her own childhood summers spent with extended family in Hampton Bays.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Ray and Elena Herrmann of Trumbull, CT; Thomas A. and Hove Herrmann of Easton, CT; Barbara Herrmann and Tom Gonsiorowski of Jamestown, RI; and Carol Herrmann and her partner Allen Converse of Tiverton, RI; as well as her eight beloved grandchildren and five cherished great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Raymond A. Herrmann.
Friends are invited to calling hours from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the Leo P. Gallagher Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2810 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CT. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery in Queens, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church.
