He was 89. Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of Rose Carraher Joseph and George M. Joseph. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Jim) Kelley; George (Meredith) Joseph; Eileen Joseph (Brian Self); and Michael Joseph (Kate Marks); nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Thomas. He leaves behind his sister Lorraine Hamilton, and is predeceased by his sister Ann Cochrane.
A first generation student, George graduated from Iona College and received a Masters Degree in Education from SUNY Oneonta. Over the course of nearly 35 years, he educated generations of young minds as an elementary school teacher, primarily with Port Chester Public Schools, before retiring in 1992, when he was awarded Teacher of the Year. George proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and the National U.S. Army Reserve. His strong work ethic and commitment to country was only surpassed by his commitment to his family.
In 1961, he married his “Beloved Betty,” with whom he raised four children in Stamford, CT. If asked, he would say that raising his children was the best job he ever had. The love he shared for his children was unconditional; his support was unwavering. In time he embraced an extended family and joyfully welcomed nine grandchildren, Jennifer Joseph Prue (Nick); Elizabeth Joseph (Stephanie Boyles); Katherine Kelley; Patricia Kelley Westfahl (Steven); Michael Paul Joseph; Dante Joseph; Anthony Joseph; Gabriel Joseph; and Xavier Joseph; and two great-grandchildren (Cayleigh and Kennedy Prue). Each was the apple of (and the source of the twinkle in) his eye.
Anyone who knew George recognized in him the pride he felt for his family, his friendly smile, and his kindness. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Leo Parish and a proud member of the St. Leo Choir, who became a second family. He volunteered in many capacities, including Christmas in April; the Irish Coffee Booth at the St. Leo Fair; and the St. Leo Soup Kitchen, which provided meals for the New Covenant Center. For years, George led one of the Thanksgiving service teams and provided weekly deliveries for hot dog day. All of these activities brought cherished experiences and new friendships, adding to a list of lifelong friends who treasured his loyalty, integrity, and thoughtfulness.
George took solace in his faith and lived a life of service and gratitude. These values were evident daily and expressed frequently through his favorite motto, “It’s nice to be nice.”
