Frank Kapitan, 96 of Stamford Connecticut, and a WWII Veteran, passed away peacefully in Newport News, VA on August 29, 2016, at the home of his daughter-in-law, Carol (Genovese Kapitan) McDonald and her husband Steve where he resided for the past few years.
He was born on December 31, 1919 in Perth Amboy, NJ to Karoly (Charles) and Elizabeth Hertzig Kapitany (Szabo), and moved to Stamford as a young boy.
During WWII he served in the Army with the 250th Combat Engineer Battalion whose job it was to build pontoon bridges to replace those destroyed by the Germans during battle so that the US troops and equipment could cross the rivers.
He held a variety of jobs during his younger years, including working in a shoe factory, and later retired in 1986 after a 34-year career with the U.S. Post Office.
Frank was predeceased by his parents Karoly and Elizabeth Kapitany, his stepfather, Paul Szabo and a brother Charles (Chick) Kapitan. He was also predeceased by his wife of almost 70 years, Helen Hornyak Kapitan and their children, Ronald F. and Joyce L. Kapitan.
He is survived by his grandson Shawn M. Kapitan Sr. (Nicole), and great grandchildren Shawn M. Kapitan, Jr., Ryan Patrick Kapitan, Gracie Lynn Kapitan and four nieces and a nephew.
The family would like to thank Frank’s devoted caregiver, Ruth Holland of Home Instead Senior Care (Newport News, VA), whose dedication, love and caring ways brought so much joy and happiness to him during the last years of his life.
Family and friends are invited to join us for a service to celebrate Frank’s life on October 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church (The “Fish” Church), 1101 Bedford St., Stamford, Ct. A burial with military honors will follow the service at the Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place in Stamford.
