Once in a lifetime along comes a bright star. On February 13, 1919, God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to share this star with us. That star was Esther “Ethel” Ruth Edwards affectionately known as Nene. Ethel was born in Santiago, Cuba to the late Peter and Florence Jeffers. Ethel was the youngest of seven children. Her father worked for United Fruit Company and her mother was a missionary for the Salvation Army.
Her parents’ livelihood destined Ethel to be a world traveler at a young age. She traveled to Honduras, Panama, Belize, and Montserrat. She would often recall stories of her travels to the various countries. Ethel returned to Jamaica as a young adult and owned her own seamstress store in Kingston. She married Arthur George Edwards on June 28, 1942. They had three beautiful children: Valerie, Joy and Ricky. In the mid-1950s, Ethel moved to Stamford, CT where she worked as a housekeeper and nanny for The Lubov Family where she became an integral part of their family, developing a long-lasting friendship. After working for the Lubov’s, Ethel began work as a seamstress for Meadowbank.. She and Eunice Lubov continued to have their weekly get together, either via phone or in person.
Ethel was also a co-partner in a catering business where she worked at serving parties. She was a great cook with many specialties such as chicken soup, rice and peas, Jello-mold, cream cheese pie, and her Cuban custard. If you ever dined with her you can still remember these great dishes.
As a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Church in Stamford, Ethel always made God the center of her life. She always had her Bible and her daily prayer by her bedside and God in her heart. She was always grateful and appreciative of God’s blessings in her life.
Ethel’s recreation activities included: going to her various senior clubs, playing bingo, spending time with friends and family and riding in the car. She liked watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and the 10 o’clock news.
God called our beloved Ethel home on September 19, 2015. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Valerie Fiske of London, England, Joy Ramsay of Stamford, CT and Ricky Edwards of West Orange, NJ; her daughter-in-law Jackie, her three beloved grandchildren Tenisha, Anthony and Kelsey; her nieces and nephews, Myrtle, Joyce, Glenn, Donald, Sheila, Janet, Florence Viola, Dalton, and Ralph. And those she considered family: Jennifer, Brenda, Francis, Judy, Linda, David, Mitchel and Destiny along with a host of friends.
We thank God for sending us such a wonderful, loving Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and Friend. There will always be a bright smile when we remember her.
There will never be another person like ETHEL.
WE LOVE YOU AND WE CELEBRATE AND SALUTE YOUR LIFE!!!
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in honor of Ethel Edwards to Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, 1231 Washington Blvd., Stamford, CT 06902
