DOMINICK LOUIS VIESTA, aged 87 passed away on November 23rd, 2024 in Sarasota, Florida from heart disease. Born in 1937 to Benedetto Viesto and Mary (Loizzo) Viesto of Altamura, Italy, he still has beloved family there.
Dom was an avid baseball player and athlete. He was on the 1952 & 1953 Stamford Little Bigger League World Champion teams and was known for his speed and his ability to steal bases. He was the top batter in the 1953 World Championship with a .600 average. Dom had tryouts with the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. He also coached the 1982 Stamford Senior Babe Ruth World Series team.His love of sports and his athletic talent carried over to the golf course both in Stamford and Sarasota. He was an amazing gardener and could be often found tending to his many vegetables. He had a wonderful “green thumb” and could grow almost any type of plant.
Dom found the love of his life, Doris in middle school! They married at 20 years of age in 1958 at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, CT. Dom and Doris celebrated 66 years of marriage earlier this year.
He was a general contractor and an excellent carpenter by trade in both Connecticut and Florida for more than 50 years as well as being a U.S. Army veteran.
Dom was a devout Catholic, attending daily mass for more than 50 years and a member of the 3rd Order of Discalced Carmelites. He attended Sacred Heart Church and The Church of Saint Cecilia in Stamford and Saint Michael’s Church in Sarasota. Dom and Doris traveled to multiple religious sites across Europe visiting Portugal, Spain, France and Italy as well as Venezuela.
Dom was preceded in death by his brothers Angelo Viesto, John Viesta, Frank Viesto, Anthony Viesto and sister Lucy Viesto Fusco.
He is survived by his sister, Katherine Viesto Darois of Stamford, Ct, his devoted wife Doris Albert Viesta of Sarasota, Fl, and his three children, Denise Viesta of Sarasota, Fl, Dom Viesta Jr and his wife Kimberly Oser Viesta of Sarasota, Fl, and Deena Viesta Chaffee and her husband Craig Chaffee of Hooksett, NH.
Dominick was grandfather to six grandchildren, Nicole Viesta, Stephanie Schlegelmilch, Tori Viesta, Dominick (Trace) Viesta III, Nicholas Chaffee and Amanda Rose Chaffee.
Family and friends may call from 4pm - 8pm on Thursday, December 5th, 2024 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT 06905. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, Friday, December 6th, 2024 at 10am at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT.
Internment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, 124 Rock Rimmon Rd., Stamford, CT.
