Rick graduated high school from Garfield High School in Woodbridge, Virginia. One of Rick’s first job's was at the Big Barney's car wash, working for Butch Brawner. In August 1979, he began working for Dumfries VDOT. He was a very hard worker and was always the first one they would call when work needed to be done. Rick loved what he did everyday and dedicated 37 years of his life to VDOT, until he retired in September 2016.
Rick had a love for sports. Growing up, he fell in love with the Washington Redskins thanks to the bond he shared with his Uncle Ray, in which he passed down his lifelong love for the Redskins to his kids and grandson. Sundays were days when the TV remote belonged to Rick, the channels would consistently flip between the NASCAR race, the Redskins game or whoever was beating Dallas. Watching his nephew, Christopher, play baseball was his favorite past-time in the 80s & 90s. He also enjoyed playing softball for a church league. In 1993, his volunteer coaching career began at Dale City Rec Center, alongside lifelong friend, Duke Arnold, where he coached and assistant coached William, Duke's son, Jake Arnold and his cousins Marc and Steven Abel. He also coached his daughter, Janet. As William and Janet got older, he moved his coaching skills to Mid-County Soccer Association (MCSA), where he also held a position on the board of MCSA. Rick coached William's teams in between his stints playing travel, while continuing to coach several of Janet’s teams and many other boy's teams for years. In 2017, his love for baseball returned, as he became his grandson, Logan's, biggest fan!
