She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on Feb 10th, 1945 and adopted by her parents, Miloslav and Miloslava Ulman.
Living in post-war communist Czechoslovakia, she pursued her love of ballet and figure skating. Unfortunately, due to her parents’ refusal to join the communist party, she was denied a spot on the world figure skating team in ’63. She then married and joined the Viennese Ice Revue. In ’69, after the reoccupation of Czechoslovakia she defected through the Ice Show with her daughter and her late husband, leaving her parents behind and unable to see them for many years.
Her fighting spirit shined throughout her life. When she and her family moved to New York, she went on to pursue a career in healthcare. She spent many years as a nurse in the geriatric unit at LIJ while teaching figure skating at various facilities on Long Island.
In ’98, she moved to Virginia to help raise her 3 grandchildren, who were the light of her life. In Virginia, she continued to teach figure skating until her retirement in 2010. At that time time, she turned her love of the ice to judging skating and she reclaimed her passion for dancing and painting at the senior center she went to daily with her friends.
She was always involved with her grandchildren, never missing a game, a competition, or a graduation. Her passion for the ice was not only passed down to her daughter, Olga, but also all her grandchildren. T.J. and Christopher found their passion in hockey, and Katy, who not only shares her talent for painting, but continues her legacy as a professional show skater.
She leaves behind, her partner of 43 years, Santos Torres, her daughter and son in law, Olga and Tom Garrity, and her 3 grandchildren, T.J., Katy, and Christopher. Her bright star will shine on through them. See you on the ice, Babi!
I lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P) or your local animal shelter or rescue, or to Virginia Ice Theatre.
Services will be held in form of a Celebration of Life Bash after the Pandemic is over, planned for September or October.
