Lila Mae (Becker) Schafer of Fredericksburg, Virginia, aged 84, went to be with the Lord on March 15, 2025. She is now joyfully reunited with her husband of 63 years, William (Bill) H. Schafer, Jr., who passed before her.
Born in Colchester, New York, Lila lived most of her life in New Jersey, graduating in 1958 from Batton High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1961, Lila graduated from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and began her career as a registered nurse, loving the many responsible positions she held. She retired in 2001, to Greenville, Virginia.
Lila was a lifetime member of the Baptist Church, an avid quilter and seamstress, and loved to gift quilts to friends and family. She loved gardening, and enjoyed living history with her husband Bill, recreating the lifestyles and traditions practiced by early Americans involved in the fur trade and exploration of our country's vast wilderness areas. Together they attended many National Rendezvous sponsored by the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association. She developed many skills in early American living, including porcupine quill embroidery. She was a gourmet cook and loved cooking and cookbooks.
Lila was predeceased by her parents Burton and Kathryn, her husband Bill, and brother Donald. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth, son-in-law Daniel, sister Lorna, brother George, and many nieces and nephews.
As per Lila’s request, no services will be held.
