Born on August 31, 1982, in Northport, New York, James lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep love for his family and community.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army from 2000 to 2004 as a member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division. During his military career, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His time in the service shaped his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to helping others.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, James channeled his skills and passion into building a career that reflected both his talents and values. He founded Real Deal Home Improvement shortly after leaving the military. Over the years, he explored various roles in security and healthcare maintenance and safety before returning to his true calling—home renovation. In 2022, he partnered with his brother to establish Smith's Remodeling of Fredericksburg, Inc., a venture that combined craftsmanship with family pride. In 2024, James took another bold step by launching Stronghold Renovations, LLC, where he continued to bring quality workmanship and integrity to every project.
James was a devoted husband to Elizabeth and a loving father to their three children: Evelyn, Everett, and Eleanor. His greatest joy came from spending time with them—whether hiking through nature trails or working together around the house and yard. An avid outdoorsman at heart, James found peace in nature and purpose in every task he undertook.
He is also remembered with love by his mother, Kathy Smith; father, Jerry Smith and stepmother, Diane Smith; sisters, Felicia Barber (Chaz) and twin, Angelica Alford (Brent); brother, Robert Smith (Sam); as well as many nieces and nephews who brought him great pride: Kayla Riendeau (Damian), Hailey Riendeau, Matthew Riendeau, Nolan Alford, Noah Alford, Ashton Alford, Kayden Whitlock, Eric Baker; David Larmore (Kelsey), Carleigh Larmore, Adalyn Larmore; Daphne Larmore (Brandon), Brandon Callahan (Allison), Elaina Callahan; Brittany Callahan; Zach Downes; Evan Tindall; Preston Steffanic; Julia Steffanic; Colin Steffanic; Viola Steffanic; and John Thacker.
