LtCol (Ret) Daniel A. Schmitt, age 52, passed away on July 24, 2024 in Stafford, VA. Dan is survived by Adam Schmitt, Elizabeth (Blaine) Mainz, William Schmitt, Sophia Schmitt, his children with Corinne Schmitt; his grandchild, Lyla Mainz; his mother, Karen Schmitt; and his 13 siblings, David Schmitt, Sue Stottlemyer, Julie Elking, Bernard Schmitt, Michael Schmitt, Catherine Collins, Ann Schmitt, Emily Howard, Mary Sizemore, Margaret French, Lucy Kostelny, Jacob Schmitt, and Matthew Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his father, David Anthony Schmitt. Dan dedicated his life to serving his country as a proud U.S. Marine, earning respect and admiration as a fierce warrior for his unwavering commitment and leadership. Known for his readiness to help at a moment’s notice, Dan was the person friends and family turned to in times of need, confident that he would go above and beyond to solve any problem, no matter the size. His natural leadership inspired both his peers and those who served under him. Dan was beloved in any group, but was notably great with children, who were drawn to his playful spirit and corny jokes. He had a natural musical talent that he loved to share, filling his home with music and joy. Dan was also a gifted storyteller, captivating his audience with tales that could make anyone laugh or sit in rapt attention. His fascination with all things mechanical kept him busy restoring and tinkering with vehicles, power tools, and anything else with a motor. Dan's legacy is one of boundless generosity, spirited laughter, and a relentless drive to make the world a better place for those he loved. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. A funeral service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on August 2, 2024 at 10:30 am.
