After a lengthy and difficult battle with dementia, Valdevia (Val) Clark Powell, age 76, passed away peacefully in Hospice care on Monday October 28, 2024. Heaven now has a new angel. Val was born on June 29, 1948 in Richmond, Virginia. Her loving parents were Carl Cameron Clark and Eleanor Pleasants Clark.
Throughout her childhood her family moved around the country settling in several places collecting lifelong friends in PA, ID, VA and Texas. She graduated with the Butler (PA) high school senior class of 1966, then earned an Associate’s Degree from Butler County Community College and graduated from M. D. Anderson school of Cytology in 1970. She worked as a Cytologist in Houston until her retirement at age 65. She also instructed M. D. Anderson students along the way. She made many more longtime friends while working.
Her true joy came when she became a mother in 1980 and a grandmother in 2013. She enjoyed gardening and became certified in the Texas A&M Master Gardener program. She loved family gatherings, baking for her children, holiday decorating, traveling, camping, fishing and even scuba diving but nothing was more important than family with whom she shared her love of music and art. She became very proficient at needlepoint and adult coloring books.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Robert Clark. She is survived by her loving husband (since 1972) Russell Powell, her sister Grace Gaines and family, her son Brian Powell, her daughter Ashley Parham, son in law Brandon Parham and her adored grandsons Evan and Timothy Parham.
During her waning days she received outstanding care at the Houston Hospice Medical Center, the largest and best non-profit hospice in greater Houston. Memorial gifts in Val’s memory can be made to the Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030 or www.houstonhospice.org.
