On Friday, October 29, 2021, Sophie Fernandez Flores, of Sugar Land, passed away at the age of 86 with a heart full of love. She lived her life to the fullest and spent her last day visiting with loved ones, leaving them with the joy and laughter for which she was known.
She was born in Houston, Texas on March 26, 1935 to Jose and Juana Fernandez. From an early age, she learned from them the value of hard work, faith, and strength in family.
She is survived by her husband Thomas Kino Flores to whom she was married for over 65 years. They met as children in middle school and their great love continued through his time in the military during the Korean War, after which they were married and had four children.
Sophie dedicated her life to her family and enjoyed every opportunity to host or attend a party. She never turned down an invitation and she enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her kitchen table, complete with her homemade baked desserts. She enjoyed cooking, music, especially mariachi music, giggling with her sisters, family trips to casinos, and helping her family any way she could. She was always there to help, to lift spirits, to celebrate, to make her famous tamales, her strawberry cake or her legendary lemon meringue pie, to cheer from the bleachers, and to spread her contagious laughter.
Her stunning beauty, as evidenced in photographs and stories of her youth, and her generosity of spirit will be missed by the many people she loved and who were lucky enough to know and love her.She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Leonor Cruz, Julia Gonzales, and Lucy Valdez; and her brothers Jorge and Pete Fernandez.
Sophie is also survived by her children: daughter Esther Campos and husband Richard, sons Rudy Flores, David Flores, and Robert Flores; 8 grandchildren: Richard Campos, Sr. and wife Rachel, Chris Campos and wife Desiree, Albert Campos, Alicia Prum and husband Vutha, Felicia Gulihur and wife Gay Nell, Anthony Flores, Alaudia Flores, and Alena Flores; 6 great grandchildren: Richard Campos, Jr., Ryan Campos, Logan Campos, Dylan Campos, Sophia Prum, and Mia Prum; sisters Virginia Hernandez and Inez Vasquez, and many nieces and nephews.
