Shelby Jean Field

Shelby Wiedmayer Field (Suggs), age 78, died unexpectedly at home in Stafford, TX on October 26, 2017. She was born March 11, 1939, in Fayetteville, AL, to Arvie Eleanor Davis and Clyde Lanthus Suggs. After graduating from New Hope high school in 1957, Shelby briefly attended MS State University before embarking on an adventure as a stewardess for Southern Airways where she met and married her first husband, Robert (Bob) Wiedmayer, a pilot for the same airline. They were married 16 years, lived in several states, and had one child before Bob died of a heart attack in 1978.

Shelby returned to Columbus in 1969, where she finished her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at MS University for Women and began teaching 4th grade reading at New Hope Elementary. She was a gifted teacher and continued her own education by attending night school and completing her Master of Science in Elementary Education and her Educational Specialist degrees at MS State University. She taught reading for 12 years at New Hope before marrying her husband of 25 years, Jim Field, in 1983 and relocating to Houston, TX. Always a planner, Shelby had interviewed and accepted a teaching position with Stafford MSD prior to her move and transitioned from teaching in elementary school to middle school where she truly shined as a reading teacher for 18 years until her retirement.

Shelby was an avid reader, enthusiastic gardener, and willing volunteer for a number of school and church projects. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Missouri City where she graciously volunteered her time and talent teaching reading and English through the church’s prison ministry for a number of years and later as a Stephen Ministry volunteer.

Shelby is survived by her daughter, Cyndi Roberts and husband Tim, grandchildren Kurth and Kate Cole and Dallas Johnson, sister-in-law Bobbie Ann Suggs, niece Dawn Johnson and husband Perry, cousin Donna Sue Sarrach and husband Ted and other beloved extended family. She is preceded in death by her husband Jim Field in 2008, her brother Bobby Suggs in 2016, and her parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, November 18, 2017, in the Chapel at First United Methodist Church of Missouri City, 3900 Lexington Blvd., Missouri City, TX 77459, with a reception following in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church and designated for The Shelby Field Memorial Scholarship Fund which has been set up by the family to provide scholarships for high school graduates pursuing a college degree in education.
