Joe was born on Mother’s Day, in Evanston Illinois. His father, Joe (Joseph Peter Nilles) was a carpenter, and his mother Stella (Cooke) Nilles doted on him from day one. The family moved to Hollywood, Florida in the mid 40’s. He graduated from Broward County High School in 1953 and attended the University of Florida. Upon graduation in 1957, he was commissioned an Officer in the United States Air Force. He spent twenty years in service. He met the love of his life, Stella R. Rey in March of 1959 in a bowling alley where he bowled in a Catholic’s singles league in Los Angeles, California. He was then sent to Stuttgart, West Germany in May. They were married in July of 1959. Their life together started in a foreign country and their love of travel did too. During their 56 years of marriage, they visited all 50 states, 6 continents, and too many countries to name. During his Air Force career, he was stationed overseas four times: Stuttgart West Germany; Bitburg, West Germany; Brindisi, Italy and Seoul, South Korea. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he was a security specialist for the US government in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dad succumbed to Parkinson’s disease. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
He is survived by his sons and their spouses: Joe & Karin Nilles, Robert & Julie Nilles, Richard Nilles, his adopted daughter and spouse; Cathy and Bill Wright of VA, along with many Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
