Ines Maria Guerra, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt was called to Heaven on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at the age of 97. She leaves a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, fearlessness and bravery. She was born on August 8, 1927 in Guaimaro, Cuba.
Ines was preceded in death by her parents Ana and Antonio Martinez and her beloved husband Pedro “Bebo” Guerra. They were married in 1954 and enjoyed 54 beautiful years together. They welcomed their son Ricardo in July of 1955 and daughter Martha nine years later in August of 1964. Ines apprenticed under a famous Cuban designer and became a seamstress allowing her to help support the family during a very difficult time during the Cuban Revolution.
The family immigrated to the United States on September 22, 1969, arriving in Miami, Florida with one suitcase and a few pesos to their name. A week later they settled in Houston, Texas where they would call home and live the true American Dream. Upon arriving in the US, the young couple found jobs at Houston’s first Cuban restaurant- Cardet’s on Fairview. Here she would discover her love and passion for cooking and the Cuban Cuisine, and later was known for her famous specialties like empanadas, croquetas and flan recipes. After a few years, a good friend helped her find a position as seamstress at Houston’s fashion icon Sakowitz Department store on Main Street, where she was able to apply her skills as a designer and seamstress. Later, when this store closed she was fortunate to move to Neiman Marcus in The Galleria where she worked until she was 77. Here she worked on high-end couture fashion designs for many of Houston’s socialites. She was beloved among all her peers and coworkers, and truly enjoyed staying connected to her love for fashion.
Ines is survived by her children Ricardo (Maria) Guerra, Martha (Jose) Curras; her grandchildren Lissette (Robert) Bazan, Kristin (Zachary) Fulton, Adrianne (Michael) Bazan, Richard (Shelby) Guerra, Alejandro Curras and fiancé Breighana Naiser; great-grandchildren Mila Bazan, Cristian Bazan, Olivia Fulton and Daniel Fulton; sister Olga Carmenates; nieces Dr. Olga Carmenates and Uvelina Carmenates.
She will be remembered for her resilience, loyalty, faith in the Lord and profound love for her family and close friends.
Rest in Peace Abuela Ines/Nana! You will forever remain in our hearts and we are happy you are finally reunited with your Bebo!
Pallbearers: Richard Guerra, Alejandro Curras, Robert Bazan, Michael Bazan, Zachary Fulton, Jose Curras.
