CARLOS HERNANDEZ, JR, 83, died April 28, 2017 from complications of end-stage renal disease at his home in Sugar Land. Born in San Antonio on June 4, 1933, of Candelaria Martinez (1914 to 2000) and Candido Castillo (1908 to 1996). He married Carmen Fernandez in San Antonio on May 22, 1955, and moved to Corpus Christi and Laredo before relocating to Houston in 1967. He worked at Corpus Christi Hardware from 1955 to 1967, Power Distributors from 1967 to 1979, Equitable, Massachusetts Mutual and John Hancock Insurance companies from 1979 until retirement in 1993. He was in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, serving in the United States and Germany. He was educated at Breckenridge High School in San Antonio and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. He championed disabled citizen rights throughout his life, and actively supported community and Christian charities as a volunteer, board member, and civic leader. He is survived by his three siblings, Tere Castillo (spouse Michael Clary), Robert Castillo (spouse Estella C. Castillo), and Isabel T. (Betty) Castillo, and his sons, Carlos Hernandez (spouse Carmen M. Hernandez), Frank Hernandez (spouse Geneva R. Hernandez), Phillip Hernandez (spouse Jamie O. Hernandez), Thomas Hernandez (spouse Margaret B. Hernandez), and David Hernandez, 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Visitation services will be held at five o’clock the evening of Sunday, May 7, in the Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 S. Kirkwood Road in Stafford, with a rosary service to begin at seven o’clock. A Funeral Mass will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, May 8, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 705 St. Theresa Blvd. in Sugar Land. The Rite of Committal will be at South Park Cemetery in Pearland.
