Matthew (Matt) Lowe King died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Tuesday, the 11th of February 2025. He was driving a semi-truck through the small town of Hutchinson, Minnesota when while going around a curve, the truck tipped, overturned, and hit a tree.
Matt was born in Alliance, Nebraska and grew up with his brothers in the small town of Harrison in the very northwest corner of the state. He lived for a time in Reno, NV, where he met his long-term partner Donnell Eames, in 1994. He worked there as a cab driver before they moved to Hastings, NE, in 1998, eventually settling in Lincoln. He worked decades for several trucking companies, most recently Mather on long haul routes all over the U.S. He was proud of his work delivering vital goods to supply America.
Matt was passionate about sports and seldom failed to attend the University of Nebraska football games with his brother, Major. He loved children and would spend $1,000 on candy at Halloween for neighborhood kids. He was an ardent music lover, burning custom CDs for family and friends. And of course, he was an avid pool player and a very, very good one, competing in an annual statewide tournament and his local watering hole, O’Rourkes. He got that from his Grandpa Sitz.
Matt went out of his way to see his nieces and nephew on his many travels and would always bring treats or toys for their numerous pets. He and Donnell parented 17 animals through the years! Marly and Joni will now wonder who to play frisbee with at the dog park, where Matt was a regular, befriending other dogs to teach.
But Matt will always be remembered for his huge heart and generosity to those he cared for. He is survived by his partner of 31 years, Donnell Eames, and her daughter Chantell Eames-Downey and husband Cody and their son Jaxson, and son Ryan Eames and wife Ashley, all of Lincoln, his brothers Scott King and wife Beryl Brown (Bermuda) and their daughter Hannah (Boston, MA), Charles “C.G.” King (Wooster, OH) and his daughters Miriam (Columbus, OH) and Charlotte (Cleveland, OH), Major King and his wife Nancy, daughter Kayla (Centennial, CO), and son Logan (Vancouver, WA).
He was predeceased by his father Theodore King, mother Marjorie King and brother Todd King.
A memorial/celebration of life service is pending.
