Helen Marie Carlson was born May 16, 1927 in Medina, Washington. She was the third child of Esther (nee Nelson) and Henning Carlson. Helen attended Grade school with neighbor children in a one room schoolhouse about a mile from her home. Helen was always fond of children and was also very creative, enjoying sewing, quilting, and many handicrafts throughout her life. Upon the death of her father in 1939, the family relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where they were welcomed by the Nelson family. Helen remained in the Twin Cities the rest of her life. She dearly loved the city of St. Paul and the Lake Phalen neighborhood where she and Lois lived in their cherished home. She worked for St. Paul Fire and Marine with her sister Lois until her retirement in 1984. Together with her sister Lois, Helen dedicated much of her life to caring for her mother. Helen and her sisters held family close; aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and even their spouses were included in their circle. Church family and friends were central to her life as well. She joined First Covenant Church St. Paul in 1944, and was an active member for many years. She served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member, and participated in various church activities including the quilting circle and the Lucia Celebration during the Christmas season.
Helen is survived by her sister Edythe Mae Fox, and Edythe’s children: Jill, Bette-Jo, Cliff, and Rick and several great nieces and nephews. Her family and friends remember her kind nature, easy laugh and warm hospitality.
Helen’s family is deeply grateful to the care and attention given to Helen by her church family and the staff at Bethany Home and Covenant Village as her health declined.
May she rest in Peace.
Private burial at Union Cemetery, Maplewood.
